# What is Draftsgiving?

Draftsgiving is our November writing feast. It runs from 1 to 30 November, it's free to join, and all you need is a Novlr account. You pick a goal, write towards it for thirty days, and cheer on other writers doing the same.
## Choose your goal
You can pick one of three portions:
| Goal | Words | About per day |
| ---- | ---- | ---- |
| Small Plate | 10,000 | 334 |
| A Generous Portion | 25,000 | 834 |
| All the Trimmings (the classic) | 50,000 | 1,667 |
| You can switch goals at any time during November. If you miss a day, your daily target adjusts automatically, so there is no catching up to do. | | |
## Join Draftsgiving
1. Go to the [Draftsgiving](https://www.novlr.org/draftsgiving) page and choose **Join**.
2. If you don't have a Novlr account yet, create one. It takes about a minute.
3. Choose (or create) your project and your goal.
Your Draftsgiving goal is created when you join, and it is attached to the project you choose.
## How your progress is counted
Draftsgiving tracks your project's **word count**. It does not track words written.
When your goal is created, Novlr records your project's word count as your **baseline**, and your Draftsgiving progress starts from zero. Only words you add on top of that baseline count towards your goal. If your project already holds 38,000 words, your 50,000-word goal is 50,000 words beyond that, so you're aiming for a project of 88,000 words.
Because it follows word count, your progress goes up and down as your project does:
* Adding words moves you forward.
* Deleting words moves you back.
* Archiving a section moves you back, because archived sections don't count towards your project's word count.
Draftsgiving is about words on the page, so for the month, avoid deleting or archiving writing you don't have to. If you do need to cut something, you can restore an archived section at any time to bring its words back. Cutting a lot can also take your word count below your baseline.
## Writing with co-authors
If you share a project, each Co-author has their own Draftsgiving goal. Because progress follows the project's total word count, words added by any Co-author move everyone's goals forward, but if they archive or delete words, it will also move the goal back.
## When each day ends
Each day ends at midnight in your own time zone. The event itself closes at 11:59pm on 30 November, wherever you are.
