How are Novlr analytics calculated?

Novlr analytics dashboard shows two main groups of data: Words Written, and Word Count over time. Here we outline the difference between these metrics and how they are calculated.

Words Written

| Words Written is the sum of all words added (regardless of how many might have been deleted) in a selected time period. This includes words that were typed in directly or pasted in.

||| It does not include words written in your notes section or words that have been imported. Words Deleted also show in this section, which means the number of words removed in the selected time period.

If you took your Words Written and minus the Words Deleted in the same time period, you would get your change in Word Count.

Word count

| Word Count is the number of words in a chapter or novel at a particular point in time.

It does not include words in the note section.

You can track your word counts over time in the charts, which is a great way to see your progress.

The difference in your word count from one day to the next will always be your words written minus words deleted.

Question 2

Is there a Novlr phone app?

Accepted Answer

Novlr is a web app, so it doesn’t need any external downloads to work. All you need is a browser on any device and you’re ready to get writing.

However, if you want an app experience, you can save Novlr to the home screen of your phone or tablet. This will make it feel like the same experience as you’d get with a downloadable app so you can seamlessly use Novlr in your browser of choice.

Here's how to add Novlr to your device's homescreen as an app icon:

In Safari

Navigate to novlr.org/dashboard
Tap the Share button at the bottom of the page. It looks like a square with an arrow pointing out of the top.
Scroll down until you see “Add to Home Screen” and select
On the next screen, choose a name for the shortcut on your home screen.

In Chrome

Navigate to novlr.org/dashboard
Click the three vertical dot menu in the top right
Select “Add to Home screen”
There you have it. Now you know how to use Novlr as a mobile app.

Question 3

Can I use Novlr offline?

Accepted Answer

If you’re working somewhere without an internet connection, or your wi-fi goes down, don’t worry – you can still use Novlr!

| As long as you’ve opened the app with an active internet connection, you can continue to work when you drop connection and sync back up when you reconnect.

When you’re online, your words sync with our servers automatically. If you go offline or your Wi-Fi goes down, Novlr switches to ‘offline mode,’ storing your work locally (to the browser). This means that if you are offline and then come back online, the words will “sync to the cloud” and be saved on our servers.

When you enter offline mode, you’ll get a popup on the bottom of your screen letting you know, and an icon will be visible in the top left corner of your writing screen. When you’re back online, you’ll receive another pop-up to let you know it has synced, and that icon will disappear.

With Novlr, your words are kept safe while you’re online and offline, so go ahead: write as much as you want without worrying about losing anything!

How do I import an existing novel into Novlr?

Whether you want to import an existing project to keep writing in Novlr, or want to upload a template to help you build out your characters, world, or plot, you can do so in Novlr.

To import a project, navigate to Writing/Projects in the dashboard and click on the Import button in the top right.

Once clicked, you will see a pop up where you can import from your device, or a drag a file to, and then select Import.

If you have heading hierarchy set in the document you are importing, you will be given the option to import your document as a single section or chapter, or choose to have Novlr auto-split your document into separate sections for you.

How much does Novlr cost?

Novlr Standard is completely free! You can write your entire novel, with no limits on chapters or words, without a subscription.

We also offer a Pro plan, which allows unlimited novels and projects, advanced productivity analysis, additional features (like a ProWritingAid integrated proofreader), and 10% off any add-on purchases or services.

The pro plan costs $15 a month if paid annually or $18 a month if paid monthly. We also offer a lifetime option for $499.

We accept all major credit and debit cards including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. When you sign up, you’ll be charged at the start of the next monthly billing cycle, or at the start of your annual subscription period if you subscribe annually.

Question 6

Can I plot my novel in Novlr?

You can create a plot outline using Novlr's project homepage.

You'll find the home page at the top of your chapter list if you click on your project title with the home icon next to it.

To create a plot outline, simply create a chapter using the button in card view. You can click and drag all the created chapters to reorder them, add a synopsis to describe what the card is for, and drag and drop onto a card to nest a chapter.

|| Everything you do in the project homepage will automatically update in your chapter list.
